World Book Day 2016

Book characters came to life when staff put on costumes and descended on the Learning Resource Centre, as part of World Book Day celebrations.

Students read aloud from ‘The Cry of the Icemark’, written by Leicester author Stuart Hill, creator of the ‘Icemark Chronicles’, who was in the crowd to listen - along with Dennis the Menace, Princess Jasmine, Katniss Everdeen, Where’s Wally, Dracula and a host of other fictional figures.

Students, who delighted a packed room with their reading presentation, were: Jaspreet Nandhra, Manhar Narotam, Ebrahim Moosa, Ahmed Gheewala, Aleasha Patel, Alice Laycock, Naomi Diggle, Shivam Kundalia, Dalton Allured and Hassan Shaikh.

Fun activities were held in the run-up to the event, including a Shelfie competition, where students were photographed with a favourite book. Names were entered into a prize draw and the winners were Mohammed Sidat (7JMRO), Raghav Mistry (8MPCO) and Iqra Waseem (9MKMI), who each received a £5 voucher.

Student Jaspreet Nandhra (11MAHI) held a writing competition based on Stuart’s ‘I was There… Richard III’ book and chose Ebrahim Moosa (8JAWO) as the winner of the £10 voucher prize. His story will be published in the ‘Judge’, our school newspaper.

During the day, an ongoing quiz - the ‘Who’s Who World Book Day’ competition - was held for students to guess which teacher had dressed up as which character. The winner, Matilda Bayley-Lewis, was presented with a £5 token by Mr Mills (Dracula), who had arranged the fancy-dress fun.

As part of the celebrations, students were also invited to fill in postcards recommending good reads to their friends.

Dressed as Professor McGonagall from the Harry Potter books, Mrs Iqbal, teacher of English and Literacy Co-ordinator, organised the day’s exciting events, assisted by Mrs Stone, who came as Thirrin’s Mother from the ‘Icemark’ series.

Throughout the day, special guest Stuart Hill led sessions where he spoke enthusiastically to students about his life and books. One teacher, in a Willy Wonka outfit, handed out golden tickets to some of the students, inviting them to a talk in the Learning Resource Centre (LRC).

The entrance of the LRC was transformed into an ice cave with the addition of some lovely 3D origami snowflakes, made by Year 7 student Manhar Narotam.

Vice Principal Della Bartam, wearing a Mary Poppins costume, said: “What a fantastic day was had by all!”
